YOU Make A Difference

Got Crisis? HELP is here

Make A Difference Day, was held this past Saturday, October 26, and represents the largest national day of community service. For over 20 years, millions of volunteers around the world have come together for a common cause to improve the lives of others. Volunteers develop and work on projects in their communities to address any form of need. The day is sponsored by USA Weekend and Points of Light (www.makeadifferenceday.com).

To "make a difference" means to have a significant effect on a person or situation. There are many ways to help, such as revitalizing community centers, rehabilitating parks, improving low-income homes, creating community art projects, mentoring, serving meals, developing community gardens and much more. A significant effect can start from one simple act, just as a planted seed will grow into a beautiful tree. By looking around the communities where we live, we should ask ourselves of nearby needs and what we can do to help.

Project HELP strives to make a difference every day and has served Collier County for 27 years. It is a non-profit organization staffed by professional counselors and advocates committed to providing hope, empowerment, and healing to those affected by sexual violence, sudden death, and other crimes. Along with free counseling and advocacy services, Project HELP provides our community with a 24-Hour Crisis & Referral Hotline: (239) 262-7227. HELP is always available here, 24 hours every day.

The goal of Project HELP is to re-empower victims so they can recognize, face and solve problems arising from their crime and trauma. All victims should know their rights and never feel alone because HELP can always be found here. In addition to helping victims, the organization coordinates outreach and awareness events in the community so that everyone has a chance to participate in bettering the lives of those around us.

Project HELP believes in enriching lives. This allows all survivors to follow a journey of healing, making tomorrow a better day and making a genuine difference in our community.

No action can be too small, and any action is always better than none. It can even start with a friendly smile to a person that walks by. It is important for us all to come together as a community to promote good and improve the lives of others. What will you do to help?
